Auto Meter gauges in the factory bezel?

I have a question on how to replace the factory gauges on my '71 with auto meter gauges using the factory bezel. I have seen pictures of this done but do not know what size gauge or weather or not the bezel had to be cut. There is very little room between gauge openings, therefore gauge size would be criticle. If any one here has done this and can remember what size gauges to use please let me know. Thanks, Shawn

I know you have to trim the back of the bezel openings to get them to fit. We scratched a customers bezel with the same gauges while working on his truck by accident.:cuss:

Now we have to replace his and fix it. He is a member and did it himself, maybe he will post. We are just waiting for him to bring it back to fix it.

Here are mine. Sport Comps. I removed the bezels on the smaller gauges and used them as spacers to get the face of the gauge against the factory bezel.

That looks great, one of the better ones done. Agree, the clock just sets it off. :metal:

Thanks. I made the clock from an 80's GM clock, a piece of sheet metal, plexiglass and some ABS pipe. I made the face with a graphics art program. I had to learn the program, so it took a loooong time to create. Once I had it looking good, I took it to a print shop and had them print it on vinyl. Probably some copy right infringment issues here, but there was nothing else availble.

Wow, I didn't even think it was custom built by you. I figured you had gotten lucky and picked up some rare AM gauge.

As for copyright, as long as you using this for personal use and not selling/promoting it, you can basically do anything.

Great job again!!!

111stony Nice Gauges. What size gauges did you use Big & Small that is the look I am looking for I don't want the gauge to come out the front just sit flush to the back wall of the gauge cluster, against the factory bezel.. Thanks Pablo

what size are the speedo and the tach?

Re: Auto Meter gauges in the factory bezel?

Pablo/Wilson - The big ones were 5" and the small ones are 2 5/8". I cut up the small ones to get them to fit up against the bezel.

There's FAQ thread that tells how to do this. It includes a list of part #'s. The center gauge is 3 3/8", they are difficult to find. Here's a picture of mine.

I know you asked about the factory bezzel but I did a little variation of it. I had a panel cut out and epoxied it to a factory bezzel. That way I did not have a big gauge in the middle.
I used traditional series gauges and added a dual needle air gauge for my bags that is very similar but with a white face.

this company seems to have a gauge panel set that looks pretty close to the stock look coming from the back.http://classicinstruments.com/
