dash speaker options
 

Need some options guys
Lots of threads on speakers going on,but I can not find much on replacement dash speakers . There seems to be lots of views but not a lot of answers
Looking for ideas and recommendations for replacing the dash speaker in a 64 C-10. I am using a JVC in dash 20 watt RMS output. I have ghetto temporary speakers (6 inch pioneers) in a card board box on the passenger floor for now.
I would like to put two 4 inch speakers in the stock location using the wood template route.


Is there a full range speaker that I should be looking at?
Can I expect reasonable sound from a 4" speaker? Not expecting a lot of bass , I just do not want "tinny" either.
Lots of brands I have never heard of and too many options has me confused. I know , bigger is not always better but I need a starting point and a few suggestions.
Not looking for a thumping set up , just decent quality and sound.
Local car audio guys are a little over the top with ideas as they must be on full commission.
I will not cut the doors.

I'd look at 2 way seperates (woofer and tweeter) with a crossover.
this way you can limit the bass going to these.
also it will alow you to place the tweeters for better "staging" as the highs in music travel mostly straight on..
most can be mounted on the a pillars..
or just get 2 way 4" speakers, and you can add a crossover, to limit the bass to those small speakers..

Most 4" speakers I've heard sound pretty similar. Doing a pair int he stock locations should give you something to listen to while doing down the highway, but If you want something more, I'd look at building a set of kick panels, some 6.5" components, and an amp to start.

I have kicks with 6.5" and b/a pro 3 way sep. the
woofer in the door(hole is already there) or in the kick(haven't locked that up yet)
the mids in the dash spot, and tweeters in the upper door or a pillar

The local Stereo shop were recommending Hertz ECX 100 which sounded really nice,and other local options were alpine and kenwood. Online reviewers like Boston Acoustic S45 or Polk audio. Your Opinions???
Rainbow must be good as they are $$$$
I may build boxes for the Sony 6" I have now and put behind the seats...

I have b/a's and the first set of 2 way seperates are now 12 years old..
not the cheapest around, but they last,, and can be reconed right here in ma.
if you blow them up..(not easy to do)
and by the way b/a makes alot of other companies speakers for them,
it might say ___________ but it's really a b/a

Stitch626, You Talked me into it-- I Ordered the B/A S45's off Amazon last night.
What are some of the other brands that B/A makes for???? You have me curious now ...

if you put them in the dash be sure to dynamat the whole backside of the dash

I'm running Boston's in my Dad's 'vette and I'm happy with them. I have a buddy switching over to a complete Boston Accustics system in a week or so and I get to tune it. Really looking forward to it as Boston makes a great product, especially when it comes to their speakers.

Just an idea I've been tossing around... has anyone ever seen tweeters in the center/overhead console in a suburban? I thought that would be an awesome place to put them since they are RIGHT next to your ears... put mids either in the doors (where the pouch normally is) or lower (under the main door panel) or in the kicker location.... obviously subs in the back, thinking about making a custom box shaped to look like the spare tire go a little stealth, also maybe put the subs in the rear cargo door... although I'm not really sure how the wiring would work there... I don't know, tossing around ideas... and since I'm not getting great answers from myself (not to mention I don't have a clue what I'm doing or talking about) I thought I'd let you guys have a shot at it.

Since your on the subject,I called b/a a mo. ago about reconing my pro 60's & they told me they dont recone & I would have to buy new woofers at 240.00 a woofer,thats almost street value for a new pro 60 component set.

I mounted mine in the door, don't have them hooked up yet, but they should sound ok.

i removed the tweeters from a set of 4X10 mounted them in small radio shack project boxes(plastic with a metal top),with holes drilled in the back for the sound to come out,found the stageing quite easy to do,(two sided tape to hold them)wired to the same amp as the rest of the speaker.

to get speakers reconed call a "pro" sound audio place my buddy owns one here in the city and he recones subs all the time
