Front Drum Brakes

I have to replace the drums on my 68. I just cannot afford to convert to disc right now. Has anyone had experience removing the riveted center hub from the front assemblies then placing them in new drums ? Can I get some pointers ? Should I just find a machine shop ?

Re: Front Drum Brakes

you just buy replacement drums and they slip right on where the old ones went

Re: Front Drum Brakes

Drill the head off the rivet, then lay the drum down and rap on it with a hammer.Don't hit the hub unless you use a piece of wood to protect it.There's no need to rivet the new drum to the hub.Don't forget to repack the wheel bearings.

Normally I've just taken and angle grinder and ground the heads of the rivets off or taken my air chisel and knocked the heads off. You will most likely grind the rest of the rivets down flush or knock them out but that shouldn't be hard then the new drums should just slip on.

New drums won't likely have a window in them for shoe adjustment. You'll need to make one in the backing plate.
