4L80E Install --- just the basics...

Hi,

I'm installing a 4L80E tranny behind my LQ9 6.0L in a '87 SWB 2WD and I'm searching for just the basic steps of how to bolt up the tranny to the motor.

Are there any threads outlining this with pics that anyone knows about? Any sites that might list out the parts I need to do this as well (seals and gaskets?)

I've done some searching and the best I've found todate is this one:

http://www.ls1truck.com/forums/front...rans-swap.html

Any leads are appreciated!! Thanks!

What flexplate do you have? Pics would be great. Is your 4L80E out of a LS equipped truck?

I tried to read you link...They started off by bashing the 4L60E...So I closed it

(I'm not a fan of LS1truck so much b/c there tends to be a lot of bashing there.)

My motor is in the shop so I don't know the flexplate specifically, but I'll try to dig up some pics...I don't know what the motor that was orginally infront of it as it was out of a different truck from the LS motor I have.

What year is the motor and do you know what the motor came out of? Cadilac?

I am installing an 4L80E with an LS3. Here is what I believe is going to work. This is GM p/t #12621399 and comes with spacer. I actually just got mine today. I started a thread on here that I plan to document every step.

Motor was out of a 2WD 2004 Chev Silverado SS

Tranny was out of a 2WD 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO C3500

I used http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp to decode the VINs

See, this is what I am trying to understand....what on the flex plate bolts to the tranny?? We have totally different flex plates but I guess maybe that is my problem --- I need to change mine and get the spacer you mentioned.

How did you figure out what kit to buy?

There are a couple threads on here and other sites that explain it. Basically, the converter that goes with a 4L80E has six bolts to the fly wheel, and the snout 'center piece' isn't as long as other converters in which the spacer adapts for. Good luck.

Any other leads to specific threads / sites anyone is familiar with?

Thanks for the replies.

For anybody searching this thread topic: I bought GM part number 12621399 (new flex plate and adapter with bolts) and I ordered new bellhousing bolts as well.

I will put a detailed summary of how I mounted the tranny in my '87 build thread for anyone looking for that info. Thanks!

Hmm, I have a 2003 lq4, and a ~98 4l80e. My flywheel looks completely different than the OP's, any way to tell if I NEED the spacer?
Not trying to hijack, figured it was on-topic.

LQ4s came from the factory with 4L80Es or NV4500s. You already have the spacer & correct flexplate. Remove the flexplate & see what I mean.

LQ9s were only available with 4L60E/4L65Es Thats why the OP has to buy the spacer & flexplate to run a 4L80E.
