Re: 1971 chevy cheyenne 2wd 4wd conversion

does it have leafs in the rear or trailing arms?

if it has leafs it will be alot easier but both still doable. there are lots of threads on here about doing this just do a little searching.

you can do that but it never looks as good when you get done in my opinion. both ways require alot of work so why not go ahead and use the right frame.

I'm confused. Axles?

The 3/4 ton frame may or may not be different than you 1/2 ton frame. I've see some GM 3/4 tons frames different than 1/2, but most are the same.

Price depends on the year. There are some more desirable axles. A 14 Bolt full floater is very desirable, and abundant. Unless you're running big tires or big horsepower, you really need the bigger 14 Bolt full floater. A 14 bolt semi floater is adequate.

A 3/4 ton front axle is just a 1/2 ton axle with bigger bearings, brakes, and 8 lug wheels. You'd be better off to find a Dana 44 (slightly bigger bearings and axles).

I have no idea what they'd be worth in your area. Just keep in mind that there are difference in axles.

Stick with a 71 or 72 frame, everything is a direct bolt on, and the body swaps right over. I have built several 2wd to 4wd's and they are actually pretty easy to do. Just rebuilt the 4x4 chassis with your motor and everything like you want, then just get some friends over and swap your body over to the 4x4 chassis

Nothing else find a 67-72 suburban 4x4 frame and shorten it if you can't find a pick up frame. I think Sharpie has one for sale now.

I started to convert a 2wd frame to 4wd, but it was going to be a lot of work and I lucked out and found a 4x4 frame. But if you cant find one it can be done. As far as the front hanger on the rear leafs, I was told that a set of brackets off of a 2wd GMC will work as the frames are the same dimensions as a 2wd Chevy. I dont believe that you can take blazer brackets and make them work as the frames at the rear of a 4wd are a different shape than 2wd.

I have a 72 4x4 frame I am wanting to sell. The only things it's missing is the front driveshaft and the linkage to the transfer case. But I live in MO. If your interested though...

Find a NV4500 frm a early to mid 90's chevy and a NP205 or 208 from the mid to late 80's.
