I think his point is so much is being crushed that the remaining trucks will increase in value. the truth in it is you can put up $300 parts truck or project and get zero bites or get in line at the scrap yard and they will hand you the cash in the window. I tried to buy a perfect bed from a guy i followed to the scrap yard. would not sell i even offered my bed and cash. he had no time . had more cars to haul.

Re: The value of our trucks will be going up

I know that there were millions of these trucks produced....and still TONS of them on the road

:but: at a certain point once the economy improves (if it does ;)) I think we will see the value of these trucks go beyond where they were when the economy soured. Projects that would normally have been completed are being parted out because they are worth more that way right now... Cabs that need work are being scrapped instead of repaired.

I talked to a small junkyard owner who has been scrapping on average 5-10 67-72 trucks per month over the last few years. This isn't a major operation...and one of thousands across the country that are scrapping these. Look at some of the threads where members have scrapped 10, 15, or 20+ trucks....and all the others that have found nice trucks rotting away because the owner says they are going to restore it "one day"

Trucks in general are more popular in our country....people use them as basic transportation and daily drivers.

All that being said...am I happy about this? NO! I would like these trucks to stay at the affordable prices they are at now...but I don't see it happening....

The thing to remember is he's got $200-250 in scrap. So $350 or so should be able to take it home.Unless he's just a moron and po'ed.

Thats exactly how I found mine. The ad said it would be going to the scrapyard at the end of the week if not purchased. So I drug the trailer up there and bought it for scrap price.

Re: The value of our trucks will be going up

My neighbors buddy is a scrapper, he knows I am into the 67-72 scene so he gives me a heads up when he is going to go get one. He drags it to the house and the boys and I strip what we want. His only request is that we throw as much steel in the bed as we pull from the rig. Last one he brought by was a darn shame to scrap, but it didn't have paperwork and he was a bit sketchy on its origin. Nice 68 C20 with a running 327/TH400 combo. Wish I had more time and scrap, that engine / trans combo would have been nice to have for a project...

I have noticed an upswing of classic metal in the yards too, heck there was a clean 66 Chevelle with minor front end damage in the local pick-n-pull side by side with several 62-72 chevy trucks.... needless to say these parts get stripped quick.

I know people don't like to hear of this sort of thing but we are losing a part of our heritage with these trucks. Sure GM made millions of these. But of these millions more and more of these trucks are being taken off of the road. Of those allready off of the road, many are being scrapped.

I hate to say this but you can look on the build thread section and I would wager that most of these projects never get completed. Eventually they get sold to someone else where they may lanquish for some more time until they get scrapped.

I think it is a shame that driveable trucks get taken off of the road and get blown into a million pieces most likely never to be put back together again. Most of us know it is easy to take em apart but it takes alot of money, dedication, and perserverance to put them back together.

If you could think back say 10 years ago how much easier it was to find these old trucks. What will the next 10 years hold for us?

I dont know what scrap prices are in that area...but, it is $225 per ton where I live and those trucks weigh aprox 2-tons.
I have heard of scrap prices in other states being $300 or more per ton.

lil hoodlum I agree we you. We are our worst enemy People buy these trucks thinking they are going to restore them when they barley have a enough money to buy the truck take them apart then the most end up getting junked out and some were really good trucks. Just like the one I bought a few weeks ago I feel if I had not bought this truck it would of gotten parted out and now I am putting it back together just like it was before he took it apart only a lot cleaner!!!!

Re: The value of our trucks will be going up

The Economy's coming back fellas .. yeah, it sucks right now but personally I think with the huge project in NY and the rebuild of the towers people will realize to end the slump in our economy we gotta buy stuff. We can't all stuff our money anway and live in fear. That's what the terrorists wanted us to do, everyone stop spending and the economy goes straight in the toilet. No buying = no jobs. I just try to buy US made product when I can and feel if we all did it'll turn around. I'm not saying I'm not concerned about it; but as it was mentioned, I think we're mostly at fault. Just buy American made and let's shut these guys down. Let's bring the jobs back by not buying their crappy parts, clothes, etc. (yes, my wife has a Honda but it was her choice) From the hobbyist perspective, The main thing we can't do is get complacent in our 'plastic' cars and forget about days gone by. I say restore them, save all you can, but don't forget to live your life.

.. just my opinion.

I don't care how much my truck is worth in $$ value. I'd rather have the truck than the money. maybe that's just because I use my truck like a truck....

Re: The value of our trucks will be going up

I dragged a 68 SWB stepper out of the hills of TN about this time last year. 327 4 speed truck. The brakes were down and the truck was literally stuck in the same place it had been for three years. Forgotten, and left to rust. Paid $1300 and giggled all the way home.

My dad and I worked on it, got it dependable and with just basic 8" steelies and COPO caps, 3"/5" drop and a wash job .. It brought $4350. We logo'ed the door etc. Good looking truck. I had about $2500 in it.

The market is still there. Don't be afraid to spend a little on what makes you happy. This is all time you can't get back. I was into Camaros for a long, long time till people started building them for 'what they'd be worth' .. it takes all the fun out of it in my opinion. No offense if you own a Camaro BTW. I have restored two show winners and I still love them but speaking for the market, the Camaros are way out of the reach of the common (mine) budget anymore. The truck market is still good IMO, and values I think are going up. These old trucks are finally gaining some respect. I wish I had about 10 of them.
