Do the 4L80Es have a separate computer?
I know in the diesels (6.5Ls), that the 4L80E had a stand alone computer. Was this also true for gas motors of the same year range? Looking at a 1996 for possible parts or to get running.

On gas engines the PCM control both the engine & transmission.

Re: Do the 4L80Es have a separate computer?
As Cline said only the diesels had a standalone computer but the shift points etc are all wrong for a gasoline engine. There are quite a few aftermarket standalone computers on the market. Tci makes one. Optishift makes one thats a lot cheaper but I have never used it. Junkyard parts for the conversion are going to be scarce. You also have to keep in mind the diesel unit will not work for you as is.

Yep, gasoline uses the same computer as the engine (PCM or whatever they call it these days).
I installed the Baumann Optishift on my C30 to control my 4L80E. It works GREAT. Highly recommended. The programming software that comes with it is a little lame but it gets the job done. |

I've got a compushift controling my 4L80E and its great. With the optional display I can change most anything on the fly.
