Rear mount tank vs rear cross sill?
 

On the really low trucks that are putting in rear mount tanks, I assume the tank is sitting higher than the frame and interferes with the rear cross sill. What are you guys doing to mount the back of the bed / modify the cross sill?
Pics are worth a thousand words...

Boyd Welding makes some nice aluminum tanks. Not that the Porterbuilt isn't, as I offer that as well, but the Boyd is a little more affordable depending on your budget. The Boyd tank hangs down below the frame rail about 2.5", but this can be modified if you want it tucked up higher. Just need to adjust the size of the tank and/or clearance the bed brace. You end up seeing about 1.5" of the tank when you are standing behind a lowered truck.

As they come, it doesn't require any cutting of the bed or anything, and is a bolt-in deal. Just depends if you go with the bed fill version or side fill.

As a few have mentioned the Porterbuilt tank, his is a prime example of a tank that would require modifying the rear cross sill. Just wondering what people have done...

I think nates comes with the rear cross member bar shown if not he sells them.

Is there another option to this for those of us with rear, frame mounted air tanks? I have a 5 gallon air tank in the rear, and two compressors in front of that, plus my horns. Is there a tank that could be mounted in the bed? I know I can do a fuel cell in the bed, but I want something more secure and safe. PS - I have a stepper.

A popular option is to raise the entire bed floor so that sits several inches higher, clearing the tank and other components that have been packaged underneath.

Not everybody likes the raised floor look, and if you didn't want to go that route, your stuck cutting the cross sills for clearance.

I understand raising the bed floor, but whether you do or don't you still have to attach the bed to the frame at the same level as a stock cross sill to maintain body lines. Just wondering what guys are doing at the back when "stuff" is in the way...

Our tank does not interfere with the rear most cross brace for the bed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm pretty sure my rear cross brace runs right around where your second bolt hole is from the front. I don't see how I could set my bed down without it sitting on the gas tank.

I thought we were talking about the rear most cross-brace where the bed bolts to the rear of the frame.... this does not come in contact with our tank.

From there forward.... it's another story.

I guess I am not quite clear on what information you are looking for. In order to run a tank that has 15+ gallon capacity, and have adquate ground clearance on a truck that is capable of laying frame... Some trimming will be needed.

I will check back in later today and see if I can offer any more suggestions/information.

Nate is talking about the "frame" crossmember.
I assume you are talking about the "bed floor" crossmember.
Do you have a wood floor or a metal floor?

Like Nate said,... your going to have to modify the bed crossmember at the very minimum.
(Or even raise the entire floor).
It all depends how high your tank is above the frame rail.

The factory blazer tanks will work back there,... but not on trucks that lay frame.
(unless raised above the frame rails)
5/7 static dropped trucks and bagged trucks with air bags installed in place of the stock coil springs can utilize the blazer tanks in the stock location.

Yes the cross sill on the bed floor of a 63-66 truck with a wood bed. I fully understand that the cross sill will need to be modified, that was the whole point of this thread from the beginning LOL... to see what guys have done to support the bed / how they modified it.
