WWII plane exhaust on a truck?
 

So I was thinking, I love old WWII planes. Wouldn't it be cool to make a truck that has some of those features? That led to this.

What would I have to overcome to make this exhaust on a truck?

I would imagine it would have to be just straight non muffled pipes, right? I think I have seen mufflers that are designed to be short and exit out the side of the running boards, but even those are longer than this application would need to be.

I haven't looked that far into it. I know things like back pressure exist, but I do not fully understand them enough to know how that would play into this sort of situation.


So, am I just cray, or would this be a doable project?

People do basically the same thing but exit the pipes out the hood all the time, I don't see why it couldn't be done with some time and money. I don't really see a way to have mufflers though

to run an exhaust like that on any vehicle the big worry is killing yourself with carbon monoxide fumes that fill the interior of your vehicle


i've run short zommies with baffels on gassers many years ago// were great for show effect and the look at me factor but after 10minutes you'd b gasping for air and stinkin like exhaust

With anything dumping out the side its going to be loud. It will be especially loud inside the truck. You could sweep the pipes back and dump out before the rear wheel under the bed out the side but its a lot of work to make that style pipe. Basically you would have to drill a hole in the pipe for every pipe you want out each side then weld them all in hoping that everything ends up coming out level and at the same angle.

OK I know when Peter from Family Guy put jet fuel in his truck it was able to fly, but that was just TV magic. Using airplane parts will be no different.

Hmm... I had thought about over the rear wheels, but that just isn't quite the same aviation kinda look. Oh well. we'll see when I get the rest of my stuff together for the truck.

Over the rear wheels wouldnt be possible. It would end up smashed. Theres just not enough room to make the bends work.

Start by finding an Allison or a Rolls Royce Merlin V12 aircraft engine, swapping into the frame rails, then build the truck around it. (I once saw an Allison in a 65 chevelle.)

Could build bummy exhaust, or use a electric valve and pipe back up from under the truck to the fender exhaust then split it off into 4 or ever how many on each side. I think fighter pilot themes are really cool when done right.

I had sort of an idea like that once, take typical long tube headers, swap them left n right and install them upside down, but in the rear, where the flat header flange would bolt to like the lower 1/4 with the exhaust on the other side, so they functioned.

That V12 car is awesome. Anyone can shove a V12 into a car, but an actual Merlin(!), and to have the aviation dash, that rocks.

My favorite WWII aircraft is the Vought F4U-4 Corsair. Though I don't think anyone will be installing a Pratt R2800-18W into a car (or truck) anytime soon. Perhaps as a kid I saw a tractor pull truck with one of these, but haven't seen anything else in a while.
