V6 VS V8 radiators
3 Attachment(s)
Question for you guys. Are there any differences between the V6 and V8 radiators? I don't know if the previous owner had swapped radiators or not. When I called the local shop to order one they had me measure the distance between the retainers. I got 26, and I see the radiators listed for our trucks are 28.
I just noticed yesterday while tinkering that there are holes for the retainers 2" from where the retainers were originallly mounted. Should I just move the retainers over for the 28" radiator? Also, the pads I bought from LMC seem to be a different size than what came on my truck. here is a link to the one I bought from the radiator shop before seeing the other mounting points http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pli-438162 And the one listed for our trucks http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pl...rview/make/gmc |

Also, here are some pictures of my fan shroud. Not sure if it is the correct one, it came with the truck sitting in the bed.

Numbers I found on the fan shroud.

Those radiators on Summit are spendy. Have you checked your local auto parts supplier?

Re: V6 VS V8 radiators
I am just curious if the GMC V6's used the 26" or 28" radiators.
I can get the same models through my local radiator shop for 100$ cheaper, in fact after getting them the retainer width, they ordered me the one in the first link. I just wanted to make sure the GMC V6 didnt have a specific radiator before I return the one I currently own which is in the first link, and buy the 28" truck radiator in the second link. I guess I will have a custom shroud made if need be. Of course I don't even know if the shroud that came with the truck is the right one. Thanks in advance for any help. |
Re: V6 VS V8 radiators
Another thing you'll need to do if your putting in a different width radiator is move the lower mount, too-mount's the wrong word. The rubber and tin deal that the radiator sits in. There is a wider or narrower option down there, too. These are riveted in, so to move it, you need to grind off the rivet, and then use-at least I used-a small, like, 1/4 or 5/16th carriage bolt to hold it back on.

Re: V6 VS V8 radiators
It looks like the PO already moved it. It has a small carriage bolt holding it on. I was looking at it during my lunch break. Luckily my local rad shop is run by a bunch of good people. I am exchanging the 3 row 26" I currently have for either a 3 or 4 core 28". I am debating between the 3 or 4 core right now.
Thanks for the help guys! |
Re: V6 VS V8 radiators
Which upper and lower mounts do you have? If you have the 3-core mounts, then you had better get a 3-core. Otherwise you will have to order at least the uppers. And pads. I think the lowers can be coerced to work with a 4-core IIRC.
