Has anyone put a 454 in a 1947 2-ton?

Hello fellow builders,

We've recently acquired a rustic '47 grain truck...a two ton model with a 231 upgrade somewhere along the timeline. Hoping to shoehorn in a 7.4L to put her back to work. 4L80e and BBC courtesy of a 1992 RV with 60k miles. Wondering if anyone has advice on this swap and/or photos, measurements, caveats, etc.

Many thanks!

My advice would be to box that frame. That engine was cranking out 105 hp at BEST when it was new. Now your stuffing in a big block with about double the horses? I would either box the frame of use the rv frame and do a body swap. If this is going on a highway much, you may want to swap out the axles for better brakes and gears. Just remember though, THIS IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICTURES!!!!

What TruckGuy said about the brakes is good advice. I'm trying to remember where I saw someone putting a Big Block in an old farm truck. I'll look for it. The frame on the 1 tons and up was a thicker and taller I believe? Probably be more apt to take the abuse. Can't wait to see pictures.

Thanks for the replies Truck Guy and Luther G. You're right about the photos...worth a lot. Have yet to see any from a similar build, so would be of great value to me at this point. It looks really tight up front but if a 350 will fit, the 454 may have enough room too. I'll definitely post photos once some progress is made. Should be an interesting project.

You might want to look into swaping out the heads on that 92 454. those were the worst big block heads gm ever produced. A good up grade is the 96-99 454 vortec heads. I did it on a 91 I had and it made a huge difference.
