2001 RCSB project

Ive had the truck for a little over a year now so I figured I would post up all the progress and future plans. Some of you know I had an 84 single cab short bed I fixed up but gas mileage was a big concern as it was consuming most of my minimum wage checks. I sold the truck, which now I really wish I hadnt, but I found this all stock 2001 Silverado ls with a 5.3/4l60e and 3.42 gears.

Re: 2001 RCSB project

Me being uncapable of leaving anything alone made simple plans to debadge, find some ltz 20s, 4/6 drop, and new sound system. I soon found out how well these ls engines take to upgrades, and seeing how I never really did anything performance wise to my 84 I decided to go that route. I ordered a set of calspeed 1 3/4 stainless headers and y pipe and a hooker aerochamber muffler, installed them and had a buddy tune the truck. It ran great but I wanted more. So I found a slightly used 212/218 low lift comp cam, ls6 valve springs, and new tsp hardened pushrods. I also installed a vette servo in the transmission and a cheapo ebay cold air intake. Took It to the local 1/4 mile and have been a best of 14.4 at 99mph with a cruddy 2.3 60ft.

Here is how she sits now waiting to get in primer and a roll pan to come in.the truck will be repainted with the same color (raspberry 2 pearl) that the top half of my 84 was. Plans are 2/4 drop. Also have a lq4 block, set of 317 heads and some other odds and ends that I will be building for it. Motor eill either be N/A built or built for boost because I want to out a tvs 1900 or similar on it. Ill be throwing a 4l80e in after the 6.0 swap. I also need to have the rearend built, unsure if I want to go 3.73s or 4.10s.

It'll be a slow engine build, but im glad that I dont have to add things to the 5.3 one thing at a time anymore since its my daily.

Nice start! You and I have parallel truck lives going on...sold my '87, wish I hadn't...picked up an '06...starting to mod : )

Go with 3.90 gears and a detroit truetrac, the gear is right in between so you won't second guess yourself and the truetrac will handle the power. 3:73 are still pretty conservative in these trucks.

Re: 2001 RCSB project

I was wondering about 3.90s as well. Definitely going with a truetrac!

Re: 2001 RCSB project

I did a little spearmentin' today. I ran around on the highway in 3rd gear to find the comfortable RPM for a gear change. Anything over 2500 starts to feel "out of the groove" so-to-speak. Not that you couldn't drive around at higher RPM's but the engine noise and fuel consumption are not ideal.

With my current 3.23 gears and 265/50/20 tires (30.5") at 70mph, I'm right at 1750 RPM. With the 3.90's I'll be at 2100. That's a pretty small jump, there is plenty of room to go up to 4.10's.

Re: 2001 RCSB project

Good info, thanks! 2500 rpm is definitely pushing it, I can deal with 2100 at 70, my wheel/tire combo is about the same height as yours. With my 3.42s im sitting at around 2050 or 2100 at 80 mph.

Its been about a year and a half. If youve seen it its probably been on rediculously big wheels IMO its been ruined.. Never should have got rid of it, ive seen it back on craigslist atleast 6 times, each time with a different set of 22"-26" wheels and its no longer lowered.:waah

Yeah a kid i went to school with has it... It's got some ugly 22s or so on it... He said he's gonna lower and that's it... I'd put some old cragars or torque thrust on it..

Good luck with the yellow truck it's a slick one

Re: 2001 RCSB project

The last time I had seen it, it had a set of iroc 22"s which wouldnt look TOO bad with a 3/5 drop. Tell him to get on this site and get a thread going. Thanks, looks like youve got a good looking 99.

Re: 2001 RCSB project

Yeah I wasn't sure on how big of a converter... I figured maybe 31-3200 stall... What I really need is a 2wd to put the 6.0 in

Re: 2001 RCSB project

Well plans for this truck have changed, Im having my first child in a few short months and will need more room. Still sticking with a chevy truck, just an extended cab. Found a real clean one local to me, 2004 Silverado with some goodies already installed and ive got some ideas for it. Ill be making a new thread for it soon. Going to finish up painting the cowl hood, shaved tailgate, and roll pan then she'll be looking for a new home.
