72 K5 Ignition Upgrade

Hope everyone is doing well!

I have a 1972 Blazer with 350 mostly stock (pic attached to my profile). I want to upgrade the ignition system and am not sure what to go with?

I was looking at an MSD Kit with module, coil, dist and wires but is it worth it or as a self contained unit better or other options? I use my truck mostly around town and some mild offroad...

Any recommendations? Whats worked well?

Thanks for your time and recommendations!

I did a hei stock conversion with msd 6a module and wires. Upgraded to accel coil and button. Works great. Make sure you take out the disable link in line in the positive wire to the coil. With the hei it will burn out from the higher amp coil.

Go on ebay right now there is a MSD kit with billet distributor, street fire box, coil, and wires for under $300. If you aren't racing then the street fire is plenty, I wouldn't waste my money on a 6a or 6al. Just my 2 cents.

Not a fan of aftermarket ignition systems. My 69 swb, and my Blazer had an HEI factory dizzy. The thought was that IF I was out cruzing, and i had a failure, I could go to any auto parts store and get what I needed to get me back and running.

I also built the spark plug wires, from a Taylor plug wire set. Ran the front two wires on both sides under the motor mounts. You could almost not see the plug wires in the engine compartment.

I have an MSD ready-to-run distributor in the Jimmy. I like the smaller diameter cap for how far back it is in a 4x4. I used Taylor wires as well, just the pre-made ones for a Corvette. Get for a '73 for points type cap and for a '75 if HEI posts.

Here two quality built small HEI distributors.

I gave up on Pertronix....

I haven't seen anything I like better than the factory HEI. It's a little close to the firewall, but it will work. And it's as dependable as the day is long.

Make sure you run a clean 12V to the HEI. The points system uses a resistor to lower the load through the points and make them last longer.

I fixed the firewall problem with a BFH. Off road when the body flexes it can crack the dizzy cap.
