10" Slotted Mags
I want to run old style slotted mags on my 65 stepside. Will the 10" rims fit under the normal bed without rubbing. Not ready for them yet but looking to get a set and want to get the right one's. I have been looking for 8" rims but only finding 10" right now. Thanks for any help.

Try these! Good looking wheels.

This is going to depend on your ride height, but I am going to guess that they will not fit under a stepside without modifications. The stepsides have less tire/wheel room than a fleetside.

Re: 10" Slotted Mags
The 10" mags from back in the day almost always had a 3.75" backspace. It seemed to be the standard that all of the wheel manufacturers used. To fit a 10" under your stepside, you will need a minimum of 4.5" (preferably 5") on your backspace. On a stepside, I would use caution and go with a 5" just to be safe.
That's too bad, because a 10" with the old-school 3.75" backspace looks killer on a truck when the wheels are tucked in the wheelwells. You can always narrow the rear end a couple of inches. A 4.5" decrease in the total width would work just right! |
Re: 10" Slotted Mags
Thanks for the info. I kinda figured they wouldn't work without getting into some major alterations. I'm gonna build this as a daily driver so wanting to keep it simple. I'm hoping to find some 8" rims(being patient)

Re: 10" Slotted Mags
Jeff-
Are you still 6-lug, or have you converted to 5-lug? I used to buy and sell vintage wheels years ago, and the 8" stuff was pretty easy to come by. Nowadays, the 10" wheels bring pretty good money, but the buying audience is pretty limited. Not everybody can fit a 10" on their vehicles. Depending on the wheel, you can sometimes redrill the pattern on the slotted mags, but that mostly applies to the 5-lug patterns. You will find a lot of 4.75" bolt pattern wheels, and the 5" are pretty uncommon. Guys would either fill/redrill the wheels, or just redrill and run a flat plate on the rears, like the street rod guys do on their Halibrands. |
Re: 10" Slotted Mags
I'm 5 lug, I have a 65 on a 72 frame. The guy that had the truck didn't do a good job. It was supposed to be a ready daily driver but it wasn't. I'm getting everything together before I start fixing it, that way money won't stop the progress, I HOPE.
