Should I buy this trans

Just starting my one ton cummins conversion an gathering parts.
Wanting to ditch the getrag in favor of an auto trans and spotted this.

I'm sure it needs a full rebuild but wanted to get some options.

For $1250 no way I'd say. That thing has been beat pretty good if that input shaft was a billet one and broken. I've not been real pleased with ATS's converters either. But, if you can get him down it might be ok if none of the other upgraded hard parts are hurt. That is an electronic trans so you will need a pcm from the dodge truck to run it or a stand a lone controller.

What trans do you think would work best? I don't mind spending the money for a good trans. Would like to spend around 4-5k or less if possiable :). Just going to be a mild VE pump cummins but want something that will live for a while and if I ever change to a p pump be able to handle it.

Do you mind using a toggle switch to turn on the over drive and lock up? If you don't mind, use a 47rh. For $4-$5k you should be able to get a goerend, Firepunk, or Pro Street Diesel Trans, with a billet triple disc converter, and it'll take a lot. Just for reference, a 47re core with TC is only around $350. A 47rh with TC, expect to pay $500 and up if it works. I like the 47rh because you don't need a controller and you don't have to buy any aftermarket adapters. You can get a diesel A518 found in 91.5-93 dodge cummins trucks, and then get a 46rh gas trans, and have a shop build you a 47rh from the 2 other transmissions. The only big difference will be the 518 cases don't have the reinforcing ribs for the servo on the side. I've seen them brake there on trucks that were all jacked up and had shift kits int he transmissions. Dave Goerend told me he's seen theses type of 518/47rh transmissions break in that area a lot but they were probably being abused heavily.

Here's a thread explaining a 518 being turned into a 47rh.

If you go with a 47rh, here is a really affordable controller I came across on another forum that may be the ticket for controlling these. I think I'm going to get one for my 72.

Hey!

That thing is pretty slick, and you can't rig up a decent pressure controlled setup for much less than that.......

Thanks for the link!

47RH, a good valvebody and a single billet TQ will do ya.

I can get you transmissions from a few places. My Dad builds transmisions as well, and we can get parts from a few places for them too.
