Steering column slop 1971

1971 C10 TH350 column shift, non-tilt.

I just installed an NRG removable steering wheel kit on my column. The shifter is a little sloppy, to the point of the vehicle not turning over/starting if it's not in the right position. But what I just discovered that's even worse, is if I pull up on the steering wheel the entire inner portion of the column comes up/out about an inch or two. Enough that the top bearing can come out of the shaft and flop around.

I've used the search function, but haven't found a good thread that deals with what is causing my issue. Can someone direct me to a good thread that covers this, or let me know where my issue originates? Easy fix/rebuild? (I've checked the service manual also).

You should have a large washer and a spring against the lower bearing which prevents the center shaft and wheel from pulling up.
After years of use the shift collar does get worn, but to verify correct operation you should have to pull the shifter arm towards you to get out of or into park otherwise the lower linkage is bound up or the shift detents are worn out at the linkage arm on the column.

Re: Steering column slop 1971

I do have to pull the shift lever towards me to get out of or into park, but I have noticed that there is a lot of play in the "park" setting. Enough that it won't start sometimes unless I wiggle it.

Lower bearing - inside the shaft/column in the truck, or under the hood? When I pull up on the wheel, it moves upwords towards me, including from under the hood. I had a helper visually verify this.

Here's how it should look for comparison.

Thanks for the visual. I'll take a look at that.
