A La Carte Ordered Truck

Its been mentioned that you could pick and choose just about any option or color combo on any model. Doing my usual Ebay checks this morning this truck caught my eye. A nice clean CST with a 15k asking price, its a dealer, so when I checked out the ad I was surprised to see the truck is a V8 with 3OTT truck with no Power Steering or Power Brakes..

While not common I’ve seen more than a few CST and Cheyennes equipped the same way over the years. 50 years on we can’t imagine a vehicle I Equipped that way but not that unusual back in the day. My grandfather never wanted any of that fancy mechanical stuff. In his mind it was just another thing to have a problem with later plus they actually charged you more $$ for those future Problems when the vehicle was new(!)

Many "real men" felt things like automatic, power steering, and power brakes were car features that didn't belong in a "real truck". Real men were once all about only wanting what was needed and everything else is a gimmick or fancy flowery fluff you don't need.

That's basically the way my truck is equipped only with a 4 speed.

I wonder if an automatic was seen as not being really desirable or appropriate for a pickup back in the days for hauling.

I can recall as a kid back in the late 60's being surprised that they were starting to equip pickups with autos. Automatics were associated more with luxury cars at the time.

That was probably a fairly common setup, also by today's standards people just don't like it. My Dad's 1974 Chevy pickup was V8 350 with 3OTT manual steering and brakes. The normal truck also had a dealer-installed rear bumper, stamped with dealership name and painted. And a standard 8 foot bed, not short.

I've had V8 trucks with a 3OTT and my Dad's V8 truck had manual brakes and steering, so certainly both could be done on the same truck!

In fact if you started with a base truck and just upgraded to the 307, I think that's what you'd get, no?

Too bad you can't order trucks like that anymore. It'd be nice to order a new Silverado 2500HD with crank windows, manual locks, a big motor, base transmission and, radio delete like the w/t/ models are too luxurious nowadays :chevy:
