Power Steering Pump Fit Question...

2 Attachment(s)
Folks, I'm in the process of re-assembling my L96. I ran into an unexpected fit issue when adding back my engine accessories. My power steering pump won't fit! More specifically, the reservoir needs to sit where the frame is :).

Cutting and shaping the frame isn't an option. Has anyone else run into this issue? Wondering if anyone has ideas on a LS power steering pump with the same bracket mount that has a different shape reservior. I will need to craft two returns because I'm running hydroboost and want to use my power steering cooler...

Last resort, I can cut and re-shape my reservior but I'd like to find something stock if possible in case it ever needs replacing.

Thanks!

Re: Power Steering Pump Fit Question...

What about the simpler old-fashioned-style steering pump/reservoir? Do a rockauto search for a 2010 tahoe with a 5.3. That's the steering pump I have. I've not installed the engine yet, but it looks a lot more compact than yours. The 2010 silverado 2500 with a 6.0 looks more similar to mine than to yours.

What's your l96 out of? Is it something other than a silverado 2500? Was it a van or other difficult to access vehicle that warranted that odd reservoir?

You could also try the PS pump that doesn’t have an integral reservoir, and mount a reservoir elsewhere. My LQ4 came from a van (ca. 2005) and the pump does not have a reservoir. I bought a metal bottle on eBay and mounted it on the firewall next to my hydroboost and plumbed it in there.

Delete it entirely, re-route the belt and run a Volvo electronic power steering pump. Pick a part price is about $40. Problem solved.

I'm running a hydroboost pump off of an 06 Yukon and it doesn't hang off that side of the accessory mount nearly at all. This would be my vote for simplicity.

Re: Power Steering Pump Fit Question...

Thanks all for the great suggestions! The reservoir is out of a 2500 sierra 4X4 truck, nothing crazy. I double-checked and the new pump/reservoir that I have is, in fact, the correct stock replacement.

I have considered running a separate remote reservoir, but I will check into the 2010 5.3, 2006 and Volvo options as well. I'd like to find something that at least fits the accessories mount I have now. I've got enough customized craziness going on in other places on the build so I'm trying to work stock replacement pieces where ever I can for simplicity and ease of maintenance's sake. I guess that's what pissed me off so much about the stupid pump not fitting!

I bought a reservoir off of ebay for my PS pump. It attaches to the alternator/PS bracket with an over-center Southco clamp

The pump itself has a -10 JIC/AN fitting pressed into the return port

Here's what it looks like on the engine

Hey rowdy, what did you ever figure out with this?

I settled on a remote reservoir setup similar to E01. I press fitted an AN firing on my pump and fitted a PSC reservoir rat accommodates my hydro boost. I still have to finish the plumbing but reservoir is mounted on my alternator accessories bracket on a custom pedistal I fabricated myself.
