1968 (Chevrolet) Interior paint code(s) (Fawn) ?
I'm planning to restore my steering wheel, and looking for the correct FAWN interior paint code.
I see a lot of mention for code 22862, however being "flat" I'm assuming that's the top dash paint. It seems code 23025 "FG" (FullGloss) is what I'm looking for. Can anyone confirm? and/or for anyone who has repainted a Fawn interior, what paint code did you use? Also, when I pulled my instrument cluster (ref. 2nd pic), I noticed on the back, it is stamped "Fawn". Does this imply the trim of the bezel was painted "Fawn", and not chrome edged as I was thinking? Thanks, Kevin https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...ColorChips.JPG https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...422_141119.jpg Referenced Interior paint code charts: https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...rs_1968_P1.JPG https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...rs_1968_P2.JPG |

Yes. On the '67/'68 dash bezels the edges are painted Fawn, not Argent Silver or chromed like later model years. The face is called ''India Black,'' but any flat blck is good.
Let me know if you get a source for Fawn spray paint. I want to re-do my '68 wheel myself. I bought some correct 'Irridescent Fawn Poly' [GM tech speak] from the Paddock, a vintage parts house, but they folded about 11 or 12 years ago. |

Re: 1968 (Chevrolet) Interior paint code(s) (Fawn) ?
The bezel says fawn and black on back because ‘67/8 GMC’s were cast in fawn poly using the same mould as the black/silver Chevy bezels, base trucks didn’t get the Dark Fawn and were left unpainted. The first black/chrome was ‘68 for the custom trim level trucks.

Chevy would be dark fawn with silver on the bezels . I can post more of the interior on my 68
I'm not talking about the bezel being dark fawn but the dash itself |

Not arguing. About it but GM did some fu''k up things . My 66 Ss396 didnt have the semi gloss black rear deck panel. Everyone in the community said its was wrong . But records show that the cars that were built in Atlanta could have or most likely didnt have it and mine was OEM paint no semi black deck panel. Got mine in 84. Never had the black original color Aztec gold

I read the title...I explained the significance of it having 2 part numbers on it and without bringing GMC into it it wouldn’t be possible, it’s the sole purpose of the fawn part number being there. |

Re: 1968 (Chevrolet) Interior paint code(s) (Fawn) ?
First, THANKS for the replies. (and Mark, that's one fine looking Chevelle ;)
Let me add more detail (I surely don't want to start a fuss over all this stuff, especially since I don't know squat about these trucks. Camaros? that's another story ;) Seriously though, My truck is a '68 C20 Chevrolet "Custom", "special paint" exterior (as per SPID) (looks like it could be Ash Gold to me, but who knows), with Fawn interior, (not that it matters, but ordered as Cab and Chassis, and has it's '68 vintage Utility body on it. I did include Chevrolet in the title since I had seen pics where there are/were differences on the GMC's (and I am learning all this myself as we dig in). To me, even though the instrument bezel is stamped "Fawn" ..."Black" on the back, it does not look fawn, and does look chrome-ish as someone noted in one of the replies that this may have started in '68 on Customs, ..which my truck is. (additional photos below) It's the wheel I'm most interested in confirming the color on. It definitely has a silvery -fawn color to it. It appears to be a "Poly" (aka metallic) paint. I'm not trying to match it exactly (would be great if I can) but something close would be fine. The wheel as it is today: https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...422_204101.jpg Photo of bezel (purposely included oversprayed area that rarely saw the light of day, ...it appears 'chromish' (not fawn) https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...422_204037.jpg Full pic of bezel, still looks 'chrome -ish' https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...422_204045.jpg |

You’re bezel is black and chrome, there isn’t a repop available that’s correct, the chrome 67/8 available isn’t right for either year. I’d be guessing on the color of your wheel.

You know the CST and Custom door emblems have multiple GM part numbers on the back (I always wondered why). It's possible the gauge bezels also had both stamps regardless of what the actual finish had.

project king is right: the 67 bezels & glove box doors were Argent Silver and it is a matte/semi-gloss sheen - 68 and up were chrome.
if you are looking for a very very close match but in modern base/clear paint for the original GM "silver fawn poly", then 2003 Infinity/Nissan "Sunlit Sand" - code ev0 is as close as I have found (thanks theastronaut ;) ). the pics below show the Sunlit Sand. these were painted last week using Glasorit base/clear. We used Glasorit 522-322 Flexible Gloss Reducing Additive (matte paste) to achieve the 60% gloss (egg shell per the Glasorit mixing software) that GM originally called for. It goes on fairly glossy (pics were taken in spray booth), but the shine has died down to the correct "sheen" over the course of the last week as the base/clear cured. hope this helps |
Re: 1968 (Chevrolet) Interior paint code(s) (Fawn) ?
Thanks for the paint pics, that does look very very close. :)
I did find a "Dark Metallic Fawn" that looks close to what I'm looking for on my 68 and for the price, I ordered and am going to try. https://www.ebay.com/itm/59-88-GM-In...72.m2749.l2649 Also going to a local autobody paint supply house and seeing what they can come up with for "Silver Fawn Poly 23026" that is listed in the table below. https://photos.imageevent.com/hvclas...riorColors.JPG I find it 'interesting' that the 68 color chart above calls DARK FAWN POLY 22862 , where in the color chip table (that I posted above) it calls DARK FAWN (Flat) the same# 22862. I realize it's the sheen, but anyway... |

Dark Fawn is used only on the top of the dash - between the windshield and the dash pad. I chose to paint mine all the same color - personal preference / not have to buy additional paint. ;)
Concerning the match in color, we painted the section right under the rear glass with the sunlit sand but the section where the gas tank once sat is still original GM silver fawn poly and other than the gloss there is no discernible difference in color that my untrained eye can see. |
