Floor shifter vs steering shifter
1 Attachment(s)
When I bought my 69 I couldn’t inspect it myself,
since I live in Sweden. The truck was original a steering shifter and not a floor shifter truck as I noticed when I removed the carpet. I talk to the seller about it but he didn’t know why it was changed. Any ideas? Now I like to update it to original, but I’m not sure where to start and also not to finish. Would appreciate if any one can give me a good advice or send me some information on where to find the right parts that I need. |
Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
Photos of your steering column from inside the cab and from under the hood as well as a photo of the driver side of your transmission would be a good place to start. Hopefully you still have the manual shift steering column so that all you need is the shifter lever and the two linkages that run from th column to the transmission, and the hardware to attach the linkages.

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
That's good. Are you able to get a photo of the driver side of the transmission that shows the two shift arms that should be there?

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
The steering shifter is also removed. Is there
any available? |

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
GMCPauls sells one. They have it listed as a 3spd manual column shift. You have to order the black plastic knob separately.
https://gmcpauls.com/steering.htm You will also need the pin. This one might work. https://www.classicparts.com/mobile/...ctinfo/91-126/ |

Great! Thanks

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
This thread has a diagram of the shift linkages.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=358303 You might want to post a Want To Buy request in the parts board. I doubt anyone reproduces these parts. |

There are some photos of the linkages in this thread.

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
I have a couple of 3 speed column's with shifters if you would like one. No cost other than shipping for you. They would be good for parts are to rebuild. They both where took out by me in driving trucks to go to tilts for a automatic & a factory floor mount. I think they both have the shifter arms also but would have to check.:chevy:

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
Many times those old 3-on-the-tree columns are worn out where there is a lot of metal-to-metal contact. Very few of the parts are available anymore. Not only that, but sometimes the pot metal "shift drum" where the shifter handle attaches is worn out or even cracked.
I spent countless hours researching parts and trying to rebuild an 82 column. Was able to reduce slop between rotating parts by using shim stock "honed" to size, and found some bronze bushings just the right size to snug up the the underhood lever-to-rod connections. But still needed some parts that simply weren't available. Of course, the situation might be different for 67-72 trucks. Hopefully between yours and Andy's, you can make one good column. Good luck! |
Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
I'd find a way of fixing the column shifting anti-theft device personally

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
Your going to need a new speedo gear and the adapter. To stop that oil leak.

Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
I'm not an expert at identifying transmissions, but my guess is that you've got the original transmission there. If that's the case, then you should be able to remove all of that added on mechanism associated with the floor shifter so you can install two original shifting rods from your column to the two arms in your last photo that are closer to the front of the transmission.

Not quite! You need shifter arms like in this first pic. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=606021 |

If the OP replaces his shift arms, will his transmission work with a column shift? |
Re: Floor shifter vs steering shifter
Of course.
With the right arms on the trans and the right shift rods. |
