fuel gauge issue

Have a '92 suburban. Gas gauge stopped working, pegged past Full. I disconnect purple wire to the sending unit and ground it the frame, gauge goes back to E. What is the problem here and what to look for? Defective unit or is it the gauge itself?

My guess is bad sending unit. When was the fuel pump last replaced. I know some folks who when the replaced the pump they only did the pump and not whole assembly. I've always did the whole assemble. Could be sender is just worn out.

Agree, gauge is actually reading as indicated by going to 0 when signal wire is grounded.

A year ago, if the truck was et driven much I’d have suggested putting two bottles of Techron cleaner in amd topping of the tank and let it sit a few days to see if that would clean deposits of the sender (how I keep my now my kids super bmw wagon’s sender working)

But dang that stuff got expensive in the last year. It’s almost cheaper to just replace it now.

First time the fuel pump failed I had a shop do it and they put in the whole dang assembly supposedly from GM. Gauge worked a little while and then quit. Then the fuel pump "quit" again.

I took the tank down myself the next time and found: a) short connecting line had rotted and fallen off the pump inside the tank b) the float arm had fallen off. I put on a new piece of gas line with new worm drive clamps and tried to put the float arm back on. Gauge worked a couple days maybe.

Third time the pump "failed" I found the line had come off the pump again so I put it back on and used tie wire to anchor the pump up to the sending unit frame. Put the float arm back on in a more secure manner and it worked fine for quite a while and then started reading funky again.

Three years ago I traded it off for a 2016 Silverado. This was a 91 square body Suburban but I expect the pump/gauge assembly is similar.

You would think that they could come up with a better piece of junk to hide inside a gas tank.
