Suburban windows
 

What is the best way to take out the rear side windows on a suburban and what is the best way to ship them.

You can take a utility knife and cut the rubber. I would be affraid to give any shipping info except to build a wood crate

If you start prying window rubber up and over the lip, starting from the inside corner, they come out pretty easy. As far as shipping, I've never shipped glass, but would check with a glass company because they do it all the time.

I start at the outside corner and slowly open the seal up around the entire window,then go back to the outside corner and start to remove.use some soapy water if your not comfortable with doing this.It"s a good idea to have some help there to grab the window when it starts coming out.
You are basically pushing the window into the cargo area not pulling it out-hope this helps.

P.S. The last time I shipped glass, UPS wont anymore. Fedex did. They wanted everything cushoned with at least 2 inches of foam.
That was about a year ago.Dont know for sure if the will still ship glass. I took a bycycle box,put two inch lumber around the edges and 1/4 inch plywood on the sides an then wraped the glass in plastic, surounded it as tightly as possible with styrofoam from Home depot, and filled the voids with cans of the expanding type of cans of spray foam insulation. Mine made it. Good luck!

71Chev shipped a pair of the large rear side windows recently and this is the way he wrapped them. One window was covered with cardboard and tightly taped. He layed the second window on top of the first and wrapped the pair in cardboard, tightly taped. He than wrapped the package with bubble wrap, taped.
He wrapped the package with cardboard over the bubble wrap, letting the cardboard extend over the ends slightly. The cardboard was taped tightly.

He marked the package with "glass", "fragile", and heavy. He shipped the package Fedex because UPS will not ship glass.

The package arrived wiht glass intact. Removing the wrapping took some doing!

Be sure to put plenty of tape on the glass itself, helps make it more rigid. There are 4 rolls of tape in the package above. I'm not sure if UPS will ship glass, but UPS damages more packages than Fedex, so I used fedex. An insurance claim, with either shipper, is almost garanteed to be denied on glass no matter how it is packaged.

Jim, I want to see a picture of the mess you made unwrapping them. :)

Luckily my wife was not home when I unwrapped the glass as I was able to clean up the mess before she got home. I had to dispose of the wrappings over two weeks as the remains filled my garbage container.

One of the the things I meant to mention in my other post is that
71 Chev has a great amount of expertise in packaging and shipping. I believe that he would share his knowledge if anyone has difficulty with packaging/shipping.

I know I sure appreciated how he packaged the windows. Outside of some large force bending the package, the windows
could have survived a lot of handling abuse.

LOL So no pics to incriminate yourself with the wife I take it. I had a pretty good mess on my end as well to clean up. So I knew yours had to be worse.
