I've used old poles many times, although now my shop is all metal. The problem with using old tele or light poles is once they're pulled out of the ground after many years of use the bottom section of the pole (around the ground line) will rot faster than you think, so if you go this route be sure to cut out that section.
I work for a electrical utility and have a limitless supply of old poles, so far this has been the only drawback to using them, that and trying to square and plumb them. They also make good fence post.
