I am putting together the ideas for my 772wd project, and while the top is in excellent condition on the inside, the outside has a bit of the green fungus from sitting outside. I too was thinking about smoothing and painting it, just not sure of the proper method.

The texture is in the gel coat. First thing to do is pressure wash the top, and use a good detergent also. That should knock out a lot of the fungus. From there, take a DA with 80 grit, and start sanding. Finish it up with 180, then use a high build primer to fill in the sanding scratches. Block sand, and it's ready for paint. You may need to prime it a couple of times, depending on how bad the sanding scratches are. It's kind of a PITA, but the results are worth it, especially if you are changing the color of the top. Prepping the texture sucks too.
