Sometimes you can remove undercoating with a little heat from say a propane torch and a putty knife. Or just a putty knife or a gasket scraper may work also. Aircraft paint stripper works sometimes too.
Aftermarket long, adjustable bars aren't crazy expensive. Porterbuilt & CPP each have nice pieces. If you're creative, you can also take the original Panhard bar, cut it in two, thread each end (LH thread; RH thread), & use a tie rod sleeve & adjust it like a tie rod. The best thing is to use the longest Panhard bar possible for the application as this allows less side shift over the same amount of travel vs. a shorter bar.
