stock 71 column mod?

just wondering if the stock column in my '71 lwb can be trimmed down in length, or if anyone has ever done such? it would be nice to shorten the length by about 4", for it is really crammped in the cab of these old trucks. if i could shorten my column and get the pedals a little closer to the floor i would be in buisness.

thanks,
jc
