I only used it as a guide line. Yeah my instructions said the same as yours, but I always just tacked the unit in, put the upper and lower a arms on, install the spindle, rotor, and wheels, and used a floor jack in the center of the cross member so that I could put the truck at ride height (the lower a arms parallel to the ground) and put a fender on to see how I liked it. I ended up moving it forward I forgot how much. I don't ever go buy instructions alone, I believe mockup is everything.

Exactly what i did as well. Used a piece of tubing and welded a bolt to the top of it and drilled the bottom out to run a bolt through it rather then using the coil spring. Easier on the ball joints until it goes together for good. Got mine tacked in and hardware hung then bolted in core support and hung a fender. Good to go then tore it back apart and welded in for good.
