Its not a good engine for all out performance. The bore stroke ratio makes it really sensitive to detonation.
A 350 with Vortec heads, 270 cam, and with full bolt-ons with be over 350. Probably around 375 horse. A little rough for DD, but a nice cruiser. If you have the budget for a good roller 400 is easy.
305's can be built for good mpg, and reliability.
