you just have to feel it. like was said every engine/transmission/clutch is different. Drive it. Get used to it. Practice taking off from a steep hill without rolling back!!
I used to have to set the hand brake on an old dump truck to take off from a hill without running over the idiot behind me.
A lot of transmissions that grind going into first if you just put it in second and then to first it sometimes helps syncronize and slip in.
