sounds like a shift rail isnt fully engaged in the right spot.
with that back cover off the front output shaft can float kinda and ont give you positive engagement of the collars on the shaft. pop 4 bolts in the back cover and try it.

id advise putting the front output shift rail all the way in to locate the front shaft with the collar. verify that the collar is seated completely against the, rearward, big gear side, of the front output shaft. that will ensure that its all lined up right.

alternatively you can put on the front seal retainer and bolt the yoke to it. that will pull the front shaft to its correct position also.
