Not to introduce more confusion, but I've always used 309L and pure argon when TIG welding dissimilar alloys (carbon steel to stainless). I'm not sure the composition of the gas is as important as the purge. The trick with SS is to purge on the backside to prevent sugaring. Attached photo shows what I use to purge the tube but I've seen homemade setups that work great. With the inside and outside of the weld area bathed in inert gas, the weld bead should have a nice golden appearance and require very little filler. I have zero experience with MIG welding this combination. 309L may not be a wire option and trimix may be better suited to the 308L. But I'm like you, I'd at least give it a try. It should be quickly apparent if it was a bad decision. Just clean up the ugly and regroup.
