A couple years ago when I was working in the wrecking yard I had the good fortune of discovering how amazing bearing separators are... (Harbor Freight Link) ...with one of those and a hydraulic press I was able to pull the bearings off of a 14 bolt 10.5" carrier and it's pinion. The only thing I couldn't do (during reassembly) was torque the yolk on and crush the crush sleeve.

I just remembered your elephant analogy, I realized how many little bites you've been taking here lately and how they look in terms of progress.
