Thanks 46. The 309 worked in my tests. I welded the part of the steering shaft that I cut off (mild steel) to the extra double d shaft (stainless) and it worked great. I held off welding the U-joint to the steering shaft because I ordered new upper and lower steering column bearings and it will be easier to have the steering shaft loose while I'm working on the column. I also blasted the rust off of the steering shaft in my cabinet. The bearings were toast.
