I have thought along the same lines as you. My thought was to cut the carpet myself to fit, then take it and have the edges hemmed. I would then use velcro , or some other unthought of method to hold down the edges but still be removable.
You need something other than gravity to hold it down with the top off. Everything on my floor flies up at about 45mph and topless.
