I used a piece of old fender that had approximately the same curve and welded it in. Little grinding and skim coat of filler and here is what it looks like. Trick is to do tiny spot welds opposite from each other to keep from warping the metal. I would do a few welds, let it cool do some more etc. Other guys have just kept the filler neck and grommet and secured the cap with epoxy to keep a gas jockey from accidently dumping gas into the compartment.
