Good question! Since the top plate is 3/8" steel I don't think there should be much deflection in it plus the bolt is 3/8". That's the good thing about these old engines, all the hardware is heavy duty. Also, I am planning on putting another brace in the back once I get the manifolds mounted. Better safe than sorry. I am more concerned about the load on the belt since I am going to be running the supercharger and the alternator on it. I'm not looking for much boost so maybe it will be okay.
