You wouldn't think this would be necessary, but this is the backside of the crank and it was binding up in this hole before I could even get it on far enough for the splines to engage. I removed a little bit at a time until it would fully seat. You don't have to remove any material past the slot that holds the retention clip, that would put you into the splines.
