Keep the bumpers simple. The military would have. Square tube can be done easily. I like the 2 x 4 or 6, but 4" square might be nice. Use c-channel for brackets, put the front out a foot for a nice step to work off of, angle the ends back, and cap. Top that with diamond plate and you have a tough good looking bumper. Weld tabs for clevis hooks to dangle on front (or below) where it mounts to frame. The rear can just be a straight piece.
