Since you have leaf springs one idea is to use a S-10 between the frame style tank like the one shown below.

How about using an Ford Aerostar plastic gas tank and it should fit on the passenger side up near the cab inside frame so you can still have your spare tire area in tact plus the weight distribution would be optimal .
I haven't measured this but I own an Aerostar and had the tank out a few times . I will measure it up , if anyone is interested .
Of course going out on a limb is the Ford sender going to match the 66 Jimmy gauge ...?
