GM Truck kept good records back then but they burned in a fire.
GM Canada still has good records. If a vehicle was built in Canada or built in the US for Canadian usage then build information can be accessed through GM of Canada vintage vehicle services

Pontiac Division set the standard in this regard with Pontiac Historic Services. But that was a "happy accident". They were saved primarily as financial records; the fact that they were a boon to enthusiasts was totally unintentional.
Domestic vehicle information can be obtained through the GM Heritage Center, for vehicles starting in 1976 or 1977
