I guess you can still drive up there with a 4x4 and visit the ruins. The house got burned down a few years ago but the stone portions remain, including the bathroom where Charlie was hiding under the sink. Apparently the road was better back then because they drove a school bus up there!

never been in that area at all, but I just keep running into stories and videos about Owens Valley and Death Valley. The Death Valley Germans search and discovery story is on
other hand dot org. Worth reading start to finish if you have a few hours to kill
As far as lunatics, you never know when you will run into one or several. That's why I don't go places anymore that I can't carry a sidearm.
