Re: 1959 Viking 40 6 speed manual

I have a 1959 Viking 40 that currently has a 350 with a gm 6 speed manual transmission??? Can anyone help me identify it?
So how old is the transmission you want to use? Cast iron or aluminum? Is it original to the truck? (not likely) Does the shifter knob have a six speed pattern that matches the transmission? Does the truck use a cast iron or aluminum bell housing? Is there a park brake mounted to the transmission? Have you found any numbers on the transmission that might help? Do you have any pictures of it?

Without any more details, I'm thinking the six speed might be a "real" truck transmission much better suited for the torque created by the diesel engine than the SM465. Medium and heavy truck six speeds generally have more gears below 1:1 than light duty transmissions. Many are 1:1 in high gear instead of overdrive.
