The first Thunderbird was a sports car, like the Vette was, just not as much (enough?) "sport". They had a touch more 'pleasure cruiser" in them than Vette. Couldn't touch the Vette so they went with "Luxury Sport" after just a few years. Those Thunderbirds sold like hotcakes. That put GM to work on something to compete and came up with a better answer in '63, the Buick Riviera. And they kicked Thunderbird's butt! the T-bird seems to head more in the luxury direction after that. Yes, I owned a '63 Rivvy
