Neither are the old systems!
That said here is what happens;
The systems maintain a physical connection between the pedal and the brakes themselves. If something goes wrong, a valve opens up that bypasses all the electronics, leaving you with a conventional hydraulic system.

Then what in the hell is the point. Fly by wire in airplanes was developed to eliminate all the heavy mechanical linkages. Making for a lighter aircraft which has definite advantages. If this system still has all the hydraulics of a conventional system, then what is the point.
