The actual option code is the three characters in the middle, ie: C60, LS9, G80, Z53, etc.

The leading character "1" is (obviously) a dummy character that adds no value.

The following characters are ECL's (engineering codes) which further define or modify the option, but not all the way down to the part number level.

They eventually fell into disuse and were either printed with additional dummy characters, or not printed at all.
