If the top is to be off for extended times I would recommend drilling holes in your boards / tubing at the same distance as the holes in the bed sides. Just drop a bolt in place to keep the sides of the top from spanning out-ward while not in use.
If a single wall, the wrenches with the ratchet box end work the best to remove/ install side bolts. Normal socket is a little tall on the ones under the windows.
