I used to rebuild my own. I took the alternator off my truck to rebuild it (only because the front bearing was noisy) but couldn't get the bearing out of the drive end frame. I was afraid it would break. Bought a no-core rebuild and it took until the third try to get a good one. Good reason to find a local shop who does them! They probably have parts in a pile, for when they try to press the bearing out and the frame breaks. Better luck next time, I guess. I still have the "original"-I'm guessing- alternator.
