Packaging was the big reason for me. Incorporating a feed and a return line and the appropriate bulkheads for the pump and the sender is a lot to put in a stock sending unit as it's pretty small. It'd also be tough to get a pump and float through the stock hole in the tank.

I'm sure the stock sender could be modified to work, but I went with what I thought was an easier/better alternative for me.
