My '62 4000 had a 305 and I agree, it's nice to have at least 8 Gears, but my truck only had a straight 4-Speed. I would haul close to 14,000 Lbs with it and it did surprisingly well.
No match to my '62 6500 with a 478 and a 5 and 2, hauling 20,000 plus with no problem, but in comparison, my 4000 was pretty impressive.

C/50 with 16,000 GVW.
I had a year or two in the middle running it bobtail, but most of the time I pulled a log trailer made from a military trailer (fixed tongue/not a sliding reach).
So with the loader on and depending on green wood or dry, I figured that my gross load was around 25K with mostly 20' logs loaded up to the top of 4' stakes.
Most of my loads ended up going out over a 12K' ASL winding gravel mountain pass, about 35 miles up and down. Climbing and coming down was 2nd gear and maybe 10-15 mph most of the way. The road was so rough that it was just that slow coming back empty. It was a six to eight hour round trip counting everything.
That road is all paved today! But it is much steeper even than back then because they just took out some of the switchbacks
I sure wouldn't want to haul over it now with that truck and those loads
