The temp and brake lights work by being shorted to ground by the sensors, so disconnecting them won't make the warning lights turn on.

Check your fuse panel. I'm not at a computer right now, but I believe your warning lights and fuel gauge are powered by the same fuse - possibly the cluster feed fuse.
